A Last Resort

Years ago, I came up with the idea of writing a murder mystery to teach tourism to my university students. That first book, Judson's Island, was a success.

I'm a professor of tourism management and policy at Plymouth State University. I've been doing tourism research for the State of New Hampshire since 1990. I've studied tourism from Maine to Alaska, as well as in Canada and Romania, and have written numerous journal articles and over a hundred monographs about the tourism industry. I'm a past president of the Travel and Tourism Research Association, past president of the New England-St. Lawrence Valley Geographical Society, and was the second recipient of the John Rooney Award for excellence in applied tourism research.

Years ago, I came up with the idea of writing a murder mystery to teach tourism to my university students. That first book, Judson's Island, was a success. I told myself, if I could keep students turning the pages and unwittingly learning how a vacation destination operates, I really might be good at this. So, I decided to write mysteries for the general public. When A Last Resort, the first book in my Kary Turnell Mystery Series, was released, a reviewer said I did,  ". . . an outstanding job of creating a mystery that takes place at an actual resort . . . (my) books blend quality writing, believable characters, proficient plot building . . . not to mention the scenery." Thus, my niche in the world of mystery writing was established: to place my lead character, Kary Turnell, in a position to work crime scenes at historic resort hotels. I'm in the unusual position of having an insider's perspective of my subject matter. Being a researcher has made me a better mystery writer and, believe it or not, the reverse is also true. Just as my books have helped students develop an investigative mindset, when I go to work for a client, I'm a lot more observant than I was as a thirty year old.
