Helen Ryba -- Each year color trends affect the latest fashions, they also can affect the way color is used in graphic design to help to evoke certain feelings and emotions. Color can affect a person in a positive, neutral or negative manner.


Each year color trends affect the latest fashions, they also can affect the way color is used in graphic design to help to evoke certain feelings and emotions. Color can affect a person in a positive, neutral or negative manner. Studies have shown most colors have more positive than negative associations, and even when a color has negative association, it is normally only when used in a particular context.

For instance the color blue is seen as trustworthy, committed and dependable. The color blue as a collection can cause the body to create chemicals that are calming. Yet not all blues are seen that way, very brilliant or electric blues can be very dynamic and express exhilaration. Use blue to suggest precision when promoting high-tech products. The color blue effects physically and mentally as calming, sedate, and cooling and aids intuition.

Green is second only to blue as a favorite color and is a pervasive color and considered the color of peace and ecology. Green also has strong emotional correspondence with safety, while dark green is also commonly associated with money. Green is used to indicate safety when advertising drugs and medical products and is directly related to nature, so you can use it to promote 'green' products. The color green is soothing, relaxing, helps to alleviate depression, and offers a sense of renewal.

Yellow is the color of sunshine. It's associated with joy, happiness, intellect, and energy. Yellow produces a warming effect, stimulates mental activity, happiness, as well as spark creative thoughts. Yellow is very effective for attracting attention, so use it to highlight the most important elements of your design. The color stimulates the nervous system, activates memory, and encourages communication.

Red has more personal association than any other color. It is associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love. Red enhances human metabolism, increases respiration rate, and raises blood pressure. It has very high visibility, which is why stop signs, stoplights, and fire equipment are usually painted red. Red is used to indicate courage and is found in many national flags. Red brings text and images to the foreground. Use it as an accent color to stimulate people to make quick decisions. The color red evokes a sense of protection, it increases enthusiasm, stimulates energy and encourages action and confidence.

Orange combines the energy of red and the happiness of yellow. It is associated with joy, sunshine, and the tropics. Orange represents enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, attraction, success, encouragement, and stimulation. There usually a strong positive or negative association with orange, either you love it or hate it! The color stimulates activity, appetite and encourages socialization.

Purple combines the stability of blue and the energy of red. Purple is associated with royalty and symbolizes power and ambition. It also conveys wealth and extravagance, and is associated with creativity, mystery, and magic. Purple is a very rare color in nature.

Light purple is a good choice for a feminine design. You can use bright purple when promoting children's products. The color purple is uplifting, calming, offers a sense of spirituality, and encourages creativity.

White is associated with light, goodness, innocence, purity, and virginity. It is considered to be the color of perfection.

White projects safety, purity, cleanliness and neutrality. White can represent a successful beginning. Doctors wear white coats and a white picket fence surrounds a safe and happy home. In advertising, white is associated with coolness and cleanliness because it's the color of snow. You can use white to suggest simplicity in high-tech products. The color white aids in mental clarity, evokes purification of thoughts and actions and enables fresh beginnings.

Black is associated with power, elegance, formality, death, evil, and mystery. Black can evoke very strong emotions and too much black can be overwhelming. Black contrasts well with bright colors. Combined with red or orange – other very powerful colors – black gives a very aggressive color scheme. The color black evokes a feeling of being inconspicuous and a sense of potential and possibility.

When starting your next project, whether it is a logo design, brochure, postcard, booth graphic or advertisement, you can discuss with your designer what color you think will evoke the emotions you want associated with your message.
